      <image:title>Sensing - Sensing</image:title>
<image:caption>Of the familiar five senses the tactile sense is particularly significant in awakening awareness of the concrete physicality of the body, as well as developing embodied self-compassion. We also have the ability to sense our movements and to be conscious of where we are placed in relation to the space around us. In fact, the whole body is a sensate organism, and all our experience registers in and through our body in various ways. At a deep level, the felt sense enables us to become aware of how we experience events, relationships and situations in our body. Just as the Lost Son in the gospel story ‘came to his senses’ and returned home, cultivating sensory awareness of our body, especially how our body feels from within, can help us come home to ourselves and to God’s presence with us in the here and now. Awareness of the body also helps to still the mind and provides an anchor for the movements of the spirit in prayer.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Breathing - Breathing</image:title>
<image:caption>In Hebrew the same word is used for breath and spirit. It is often unclear whether the writer is referring to the human spirit or the Spirit of God; the breath is understood to encompass all these meanings and realities, and this can also be our experience. In the biblical creation story the breath, or Ruach, of God hovered over the waters of chaos at the beginning of time. The breath is a rhythmic flow of air from outside the body to the inside and back again through the core of our being. Most of the time it happens without us thinking about it, and yet it is possible to consciously pay attention to the breath and in many spiritual traditions breathing with awareness is linked to the practice of prayer and meditation. Attuning to the breath helps us to gather our scattered, chaotic attention and connect with our core, that which lies at our centre. The flow of the breath offers a pathway for receiving and giving, filling and emptying, release and restoration, linking us with the wider environment and those around us. <image:title>Moving - Moving</image:title>
<image:caption>Movement is life. Even in stillness, if there is life, there is movement, and movement can lead to deep stillness. We move towards that which we seek, and away from that which we wish to avoid, so movement has to do with intention, aspiration, exploration, growth and change. Moving with attention and awareness reminds us that ‘we are fearfully and wonderfully made’, and invites us to experience the many possibilities for movement with curiosity and fresh appreciation. These possibilities include moving body parts or the whole body, moving with speed or slowness, moving in and through the space around us in various ways: opening and closing, bending, stretching and rotating. Sometimes we move with resistance, and sometimes with ease and freedom. Sometimes our movement is gentle, and sometimes forceful. A mindful approach to movement places emphasis not on what the movement looks like, but what it feels like from within. In this way posture, gesture and movement can be a concrete and accessible way to connect with our inner being.</image:caption>
